Why Do We See Pictures As We Do?
A "blind contour" drawingΓÇöΓÇôa
line drawing created while
looking only at the model,
never at the paperΓÇöΓÇôgives the
impression of form and
modeling even without shading
or color.
Why do we perceive most
pictures, at least those
intended to be representational,
as good likenesses of reality,
with depth and the tendency
toward constancy? Even if we
correct for the distortions that
arise by virtue of a mismatch
between the center of
projection for the picture and
our location while looking at
the picture, there is still a
problem here. After all, a
picture is simply a two-
dimensional surface on which
lines, markings, or color
appear.
